Now that you’ve built your loom (you can find that post here), it’s time to use it! I touched on options and materials a bit in the first post, but will cover all of that again. I will start here with stringing, then move on to weaving, and will do a third and final post about finishing options.

I will also write additional posts in the future on different things you can do with your loom and make with your woven panels as I make them myself, so be sure to check back for those!

I started this project with the intention of using ripped strips of cotton fabric for the weaving, and that is how I created my rainbow runner below, but the possibilities of what you can weave into your piece really are endless. Consider various fabric substrates, yarns, ribbons, etc.

Rip Strip Weaving: Building Your Loom

Loved this post. Got it out there for any of my crafty friends that want to try their hand at home looming. Let me know. Have fun!

I’ve had a deep love and sense of nostalgia for rag rugs for as long as I can remember. My grandmother had them all over her little house, and when I think of my childhood, the scrappy multicolored stripes are always right there. And I’m sure I am not alone in this feeling!

I don’t know why it took me so long to make this, but I guess it was just time! Let me preface this post by saying there is nothing new or innovative about what I am making here or how I am doing it. Weaving, in an endless number of forms, has been around forever. This tutorial is simply one way that made sense to me and is perfect for using fabric scraps, which I clearly have plenty of!

Praise in Prison

Devotions by Chris Hendrix

Our associate pastor was talking this past Sunday and brought up Paul and Silas. He was referencing the time when they were in prison and were shackled down. At midnight they began to praise God and to sing. During that time of praise that all the other prisoners could hear, an earthquake hit under the prison and freed all the prisoners from their shackles. Instead of leaving, every prisoner stayed put. The pastor then said, “Sometimes God will free you from your chains, but leave you in the prison in order to minister.”

That has stuck with me this week. We’ve all heard sermon after sermon about praising God in your midnight, but I never heard anyone talk about what he mentioned. We’re so eager to get the chains off that when they do fall off, we run out of the place God had us. We never stop to think…

Daily Prompt: On the Road

If I had a chance to go back about 15 years ang get back “On the Road” proverbial speaking, I would go to one of two places, to an Amish community, or to Alaska. Why?, you ask; to get away from electricity, iPads, computers, etc, to learn how to enjoy life more simple, do my work, and then have that actual time for me, to draw, write, or to pull from within all the simple pleasures that I enjoyed growing up. To have that sense of wonder fill me again as ideas popped into my head. Like a really cool poem, where the words just flowed from my heart, or when I was drawing and as I drew, (with out any training) a good picture magically started to appear, and then I’d finish and realize that GOD had given me a natural talent, where I felt free to express myself. Or to sit back and read a funny book laughing out loud,  without someone thinking I was up to something.  Read a serious drama and then start  crying, where I felt like I actually was a part of the story, maybe one of the cast. To feel free to walk around or wander in the neighbor hood without fear of “evil doers”. At night I would leave my window open to hear the frogs and crickets harmoniously singing, so many things that today’s life has robbed, or maybe we’ve taken for granted so I’m trying to re-connect with a golden time of “Simple Pleasures” getting back ” On the Road”.
Below is a picture of one of my quilts, it has lots of embroidery and my “First” FMQ-ing . Using different designs & methods… Not to bad! But def want to be better!  So I will keep plugging along , learning something new everytime I start up a new quilt, or begin quilting a new quilt.  Any help is appreciated!
